David Ruff nasce nel Bronx nel 1925. Tra il 1945 e 1950, vive a Greenwich Village, studia pittura con Yasuo Kuniyoshi alla Art Students’ League, lavora e insegna all’Atelier 17 di S.W. Hayter. Nel 1950 si trasferisce a San Francisco, dove fonda e dirige un atelier grafico, The Print Workshop (TPW), producendo opere destinate a divenire testi fondativi della poesia d’avanguardia statunitense. Torna sulla East Coast e alla pittura nel 1955, costruendo uno studio a Woodstock, New York. Nel 1965 prende parte alla marcia per i diritti civili da Selma a Montgomery, Alabama e partecipa alla Mississippi Freedom Summer. Nell’ottobre 1965 fa il primo viaggio in Europa, dove visita Parigi e Amsterdam. Ritorna dal 1967 al 1968 e poi definitivamente nel 1969 quando, con la moglie Susan e la figlia Aleyda. di sette mesi, si trasferisce dapprima ad Amsterdam e due anni dopo in Italia. I quasi vent’anni trascorsi nella campagna piemontese, in una cascina di pietra, e i quindici anni vissuti nel centro storico di Torino sono stati anni molto prolifici, dedicati alla pittura (oltre 500 opere) e al disegno (circa 600 opere). Ha vissuto a Torino fino al 2007, anno della sua scomparsa. Sino ad allora, ha esposto regolarmente negli Stati Uniti e in Italia, dove sue mostre personali si sono tenute a Torino, Milano, Napoli e altre città.

David Ruff was born in the Bronx in 1925. While living in Greenwich Village from 1945 to 1950, he studied painting with Yasuo Kuniyoshi at the Art Students’ League, then worked and taught at S.W. Hayter’s Atelier 17. In 1950 he moved to San Francisco where he founded and directed The Print Workshop (TPW), printing books which would become cornerstones of avant-garde U.S. poetry. He returned to the east coast and painting in 1955, building a studio in Woodstock, New York. In 1965, he marched in Alabama from Selma to Montgomery and participated in the Mississippi Freedom Summer. He made his first trip to Europe in October 1965, visiting Amsterdam and Paris. He returned in the spring of 1967, staying until the beginning of 1968, then in June 1969 Ruff and his wife Susan with their seven-month-old daughter Aleyda left the United States and settled in Europe, first in Amsterdam, and two years later in Italy. The nearly twenty years he lived in a stone country cottage in Piedmont and 15 years in an apartment in the historic center of Torino were prolific years dedicated to painting (over 500 works) and drawing (about 600 works). He continued to live in Torino until 2007, the year he died.. He exhibited regularly in group and solo shows in the United States and in Turin, Milan, Naples and other cities in Italy.
